A recent scientific study set out to find out whether acupuncture really can help women who regularly suffer from UTI (urinary tract infections - such as cystitis). They studied a group of 67 women, who suffered infection after infection, and treated them in three different ways. The first third was not treated at all; the second third was treated with "sham" acupuncture for 20 minutes twice a week for four weeks and the last third was treated with acupuncture for 20 minutes twice a week for four weeks. "Sham" acupuncture involves treating the patient exactly as the patients getting true acupuncture except the needles were put far more shallowly into the skin and not at the acupuncture point. None of the patients received any other treatment during the six months follow up period. The results were that: 14 people from group ONE (not treated) had one or more UTIs over the next six months 10 people from group TWO ("sham" acupuncture) had one or more UTIs over the next six months 5 people from group THREE (true acupuncture) had one or more UTIs over the next six months In group ONE people had three times as many infections as those treated by acupuncture and In group TWO people had twice as many infections as those treated by acupuncture. The conclusion is that 85% of the acupuncture treated group remained free of UTIs for at least six months This is a small sample but it was a very well controlled scientific study carried out in Bergen, Norway in 1998. Doctor Adrian R. White from the university of Exeter commented, "The study shows strong positive evidence that acupuncture can be of considerable benefit in UTI". Acupuncture involves gently and painlessly inserting tiny needles exactly into the acupuncture points and leaving them there for a certain amount of time. The effect is said to be in realigning the CHI lines or energy channels in the body. The cost of acupuncture is between £25 and £45 per session. The above conclusions and opinion represent our own opinions as pharmacists and do not represent those of any professional body. The most important advice we usually give patients with cystitis is: Three pieces of advice are appropriate
