Qu. Is there a complementary therapy cure for Gout? (17th February 2000)
Ans. Yes there are several therapies that can help;
Eat about half a pound (225g) of fresh or tinned cherries. These speed up elimination of Uric acid, deposits which are responsible for the swollen, painful joints of gout. (Woodham & Peters)
Homoeopathy can help as follows: All of the following are used in 6c concentration. Ledum for joint pain eased by cold; Colchicum if joints are especially painful at night; Arnica if joints feel bruised; Urtica if joints burn or itch; Pulsatilla if the pain moves between joints. Tincture of Urtica urens helps eliminate Uric acid.
Celery seed is believed to eliminate uric acid.
Devil's Claw also reduces blood levels of uric acid (and cholesterol). Therapeutic doses of devil's claw should not be used in pregnancy.
Diet: avoid foods high in Purines (oily fish, shellfish, offal, game, poultry, pulses, caffeine, alcohol) which produce uric acid in the blood. Drink copious amounts of water to help eliminate uric acid. Avoid red wine, spinach and rhubarb (Hale & Woodham&Peters)
Avoid aspirin in gout.
Yeast (brewers yeast tablets) have been helpful in reversing gout (Earl Mindell)
Aromatherapy oils that can help include Benzoin, Carrot Seed, Juniper Berry, and Rosemary. These are best applied by Massage, by skin lotion or in a bath. (Julia Lawless).
