What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is based on the ancient Chinese beliefs that Qi (pronounced CHEE) - an invisible life energy -  flows along Yin and Yang meridians throughout your body and that any disruption to this flow leads to illness. Acupuncturists improve the flow of Qi by inserting needles into specific acupoints on your skin.

How does it work?

There are 12 meridians which run down your body in pairs, six on the left and six on the right. They are mostly named after the main internal organs they run through. Six are Yin which signifies cold, damp, passivity and contraction and six are yang which signifies heat, dryness, light and expansion.

As the acupuncturist inserts the fine needles into one of 365 possible acupoints on you the qi is able to enter or leave your body thereby returning even circulation and hence your health.

Does it really work?

There are now many scientific studies to support the use of acupuncture in several ways e.g. nausea in pregnancy and after chemotherapy, to help alcoholic addiction, ease post operative pain and to relieve neck and lower back pain. In fact the WHO has identified over 40 conditions treatable by acupuncture.

Who does it?

Our acupuncturist is a registered general nurse and was trained  at the British Academy of Western Acupuncture. She has been qualified for six years and in that time has treated many grateful patients.                                    .

How much does it cost?

Obviously this treatment requires a practitioner with intimate medical knowledge as well as a complete understanding of the meridians and acupoints. On top of this the acupuncturist needs to have empathy with you and your general state of health as well as your specific problem. Hence this is a more costly procedure. The first appointment will normally take longer as an extra consultation lasting some 15 minutes will be taken. However this consultation is FREE. As always you will generally need a course of at least six sessions to feel the benefit and possibly a monthly top up to maintain your improved state of health.
